Ever been greeted with a “404 Not Found” error message when trying to visit a website? If so, then you are not alone. In fact, this is one of the most common error messages you see when trying to access a website. But what does it mean? And how can a 404 error be fixed?
What is 404 Error?
A 404 Error signals to the user that the desired web page could not be found. Reasons for a 404 Error can be many: the URL was entered incorrectly, the URL of the page was renamed or the page was deleted without a redirect. Sometimes 404 Errors can also occur if there is a problem with the server hosting the website. For example, if the server is down or there is no connection to the server, you may see a 404 Error message.
How can a 404 Error be fixed?
There are few ways to fix the problem:
- Ensure that the URL was entered correctly
- Using Google to find the right page
- Try to clear the cache as well as the cookies in the browser, cached data can often cause 404 Errors
If none of the above solutions work, the website owner should be contacted and informed that the page is giving a 404 Error.
