As an abbreviation for the word “hyperlink”, a link stands for the connection between different web pages or sub-pages of a web page. A link can be found within a text, image or video.
The code structure for a link looks like this:
<a href=“hello-performance.de“>Hello Performance</a>
The Internet without links would not exist in its current form, since links are essential for the connection between Internet pages. Search engines would not exist either, since the Crawler can only jump from page to page through links and index them.
Link types and their names
The existing link types around hyperlinks can be divided into different categories. Above all, search engine optimization primarily distinguishes between internal and external links. External links, also called Backlinks, refer to one or more other websites, internal links refer to subpages within the website. These are mainly used for better navigation within the website.
Other links can be categorized as follows:
- Social Signals: all links coming from social networks.
- Nofollow links: all links that have been provided with the “nofollow” attribute. They may not be followed by the search engine crawler, for example.
- Deep Links: all links that refer hierarchically deep to subpages of the website.
The link and its importance for search engine optimization
In the SEO field, the links have an important role for the ranking from the very beginning. On the one hand, as already described, the search engine crawler cannot index the web pages without linking. On the other hand, in addition to the actual benefit of providing a recommendation of a website, the link now also has an additional benefit: Transfer of trust.
