The Freshness Update was launched in 2011 and, according to Google, affected around 6 to 10 percent of all search queries. With the update, Google wanted to better represent the timeliness of certain events in the search results.
Freshness Update and SEO
The Freshness Update represents another ranking factor. Google has thus adjusted its algorithm: if one’s own website remains unchanged for a longer period of time, it is downgraded in the “Freshness value”. However, this value does not apply to all pages and does not mean that the website must be permanently updated. It is much more a question of whether the user wants or needs an up-to-date result with his search query. Accordingly, the update applies primarily to news websites or websites that deal with current trends as well as topics. For Google, the evaluation of “freshness” is primarily concerned with newly posted content and topicality.
All other websites that do not aim for topicality should focus on timeless content, so-called “evergreen content”. However, even here it is worth updating the pages and insights or links from time to time.
