The Possum update counts as another update played out by Google. This update, unlike Phantom and Fred, focuses on geographical information that is processed by the crawler. The predecessor of the Possum Update was the Pigeon Update in 2014 and also had local search as a focus in the algorithm.
What happened with the Google Possum Update?
Many of the local websites and entrepreneurs, were no longer found in the search results following the update. Even for keywords under which local websites previously ranked, were no longer discoverable, although they had not disappeared. This is where the Possum update got its name, by the way.
The Possum Update mainly affects local search results, as already mentioned. This includes user locations, city limits, mailing address, keyword variations, and local and organic filters. Well-maintained Google My Business entries are also relevant for the Possum Update.
